La Luna is having a sabbatical in 2017 but we will be back next year on the first Sunday of
the month at Hohepa Hall, Christchurch |
Check us out on Facebook: Tango La Luna
• Our home for the monthly Sunday Milongas is the Hohepa Hall in Barrington Street. Its soft colours and lighting create an intimate atmosphere for dancing. Yet there is enough space to accommodate the band on a low stage, the traditional tables for dancers framing the floor and seats for our listening audience at the periphery.
First Sunday of the
month in 2018:
"Sunday Night Milonga with La Luna"
Featuring DJ Deb & DJ Marian
La Luna Christchurch, New Zealand
Tango La Luna presents a new sound on the New Zealand music scene - mysterious, seductive arrangements that mix traditional European sounds and instruments with the passion and sense of longing of the Argentine tango.La Luna appeals to dancers and listeners alike. The sextet plays regular concerts as well as providing live music for milongas - the social evenings of tango dancing and music - in Christchurch and beyond.

La Luna members
The arrangements for Tango La Luna are done by Wytze Hoekstra, who also plays bandoneon.
On piano you
can hear freelance pianist and composer Matt Everingham. The strings are played by classical musician and member of
the CSO Gerald
Oliver on double
bass. On occasions we are joined by Auckland based reed player Mark Hobson on clarinet.
We are delighted to have well known Christchurch vocalist Jennine Bailey in
the band. She joins us in the second half of the programme with tangos sung in English and Spanish..

Our music draws inspiration from Argentinian tango but includes the sounds of jazz,
lounge and classical
music that can be heard in modern arrangements - reflecting how tango has evolved from its Buenos Aires roots to
become 21st century "world music".
